Photographs: 1900 - 1919

Thad Oliver Hardin (my maternal grandfather) served in the Army in World War I. He was severely wounded in battle, taking a bullet through the jaw and face, and a bayonet through the shoulder. His wounds were so severe that he was left as one of the killed in action. His lifelong friend, Raymond Reiser, ended up in the same battlefield and was driving an ambulance to retrieve the wounded. He placed Thad Hardin across the hood of the ambulance, with little hope that he would live but a few more moments. He did survive, and was a Purple Heart Veteran.

The 1919 Road Trip shows the dual courtship of Thad Oliver Hardin and Guvernia Maloney (my maternal grandparents). The other couple in the photos, their best friends, were Raymond Riser and Auna May Ryan.
